Biography

Dr. Tim Li began playing the piano by ear while in kindergarten but did not receive formal training until he was 16.  After two years working in a bank, Dr. Li left for the United States to study church music at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.  Upon completion, he received a full scholarship to study at Northern Illinois University under the tutelage of the late Donald Walker and acquired both a Bachelor and a Master of Music in Piano Performance.  During his residence at Northern Illinios, Dr. Li was inducted as a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda, National Music Honor Society and was appointed as an academic advisor to the Group Piano Division of NIU Keyboard Department.

In 1989, Dr. Li was admitted to the Doctor of Musical Art program at The University of Iowa and studied with Steinway Artists Kenneth Amada and Uriel Tsachor.  He was both active as a soloist and chamber music pianist during his studies at Iowa.  After three years of teaching at a junior college in Iowa, Dr. Li relocated to Hong Kong.  He gave his first solo recital at the City Hall Theatre in 2002 performing works by Bach, Mozart, Schubert and Debussy and organized and performed in a chamber music event in 2005 featuring works by Schubert, Brahms and Villa-Lobos.

Dr. Li is committed to grooming and nurturing next generation pianists whether for church ministries or for further studies locally or overseas.  Dr. Li is married and has two boys ages 18 and 10, and is actively involved in ministries in a local Christian church. He has been elected to be an elder and chair of the council in 2018.

Dr Tim Li — Course for Performance Diploma in Piano

"Performance level" is not out of reach! Over the years, Dr. Li has successfully trained many students after the eighth level to move towards the performance level goal. In addition to obtaining a diploma, during the process, Dr. Li guides students to gradually build up comprehensive and confident performance skills and styles, and truly enjoy playing the piano. Come challenge yourself and continue to advance!

Notes on taking the performance exam

The performance diploma not only requires candidates to be able to play music, but also requires candidates to demonstrate their interpretation and mastery of various musical styles. They need to select appropriate music from the vast repertoire. To assemble a performance list with diverse and contrasting styles, it is very necessary to have a teacher with deep musical knowledge to guide them.

Dr. Li's teaching characteristics

Having lived in the United States for many years, he obtained a doctorate in music in piano performance from the famous University of Iowa. He has profound personal achievements and knowledge, rich teaching and performance experience, and is good at understanding students' characteristics and preferences with keen insight, guiding students to design and discuss the repertoire together. The process is full of fun and effectively helps students understand the style of music and accurately master the required technical requirements, rather than forcing the established repertoire on students. Dr. Li has many students, and some of his students continue to advance to further studies in piano performance at higher music institutions in Hong Kong and overseas after passing the performance level.
