Biography

Started learning a musical instrument since young, Esther believes that music could build one’s confidence, persistence and artistic sense. In addition, she found that music performance and ensemble activities connect people in a way that transcends language. After obtaining BSSc. (Communication Studies), B.A. (1st Hon, Music) and M.Phil. (Musicology) from the Hong Kong Baptist University. When she was a student, she presented papers in various international academic conferences, held respectively at University of Kwa-zulu (South Africa), SOAS University of London, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and 2013 Chinese Composers’ Festival. One of her papers won the best student paper award at the Music of East Asia Study Group symposium of the International Council for Traditional Music(ICTM). After graduation, Esther is determined to be working in the music education field, and aiming to promote music as an important tool of life education. Esther is currently serving as Program Director of Musikschule Program Hong Kong at Qin Music, where she organizes music training program and activities for various schools. In 2018, her alma mater, the Hong Kong Baptist University, selected Esther as the outstanding graduate of the Department of Music. In the same year, the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers invited Esther to be the speaker of the talk titled “Musical Instruments Classes Strategies”.

 

With a couple of like-minded friends, she founded the non-profit organization Ponte della Musica in 2014 to organise concerts fesaturing professional musicians, as well as performance activities displaying talents of students and amateur musicians. The enembles of Ponte della Musica has given performances locally every year, and toured Austria, Russia and Tianjin China. In 2016, Esther has been appointed as the Artist Consultant of ACFEA Hong Kong division. At this position, she organized concerts and activities in Hong Kong for the world renowned British National Youth Choir, Eton College Chapel Choir (UK), Colorado Children’s Chorale (USA), Rugby School (UK), Keble College Choir, Oxford (UK), and Texas A&M University Singing Cadets (US).

 

As an erhu soloist, Esther has been invited to perform various concertos. Orchestras that she worked with include Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra, New Asia Chinese Music Society (CUHK), as well as the Joint Universities Chinese Orchestra of Hong Kong. In 2007 she held her own graduation recital successfully, and won favourable comments. Esther enjoys performing contemporary pieces. She premiered erhu solo works by composers namely Hui Cheung-wai (Hong Kong) and Wolfgang Liebhart (Austria). In 2023, subsidised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Esther gave lecture recitals “East and West, Old and New - the Beginning of Erhu Music” in Austria.
